ABOUT DAVID BAGWELL

David graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1968, and in 1968-69 traveled around the world for a year studying International Business on a Corning Traveling Fellowship.  After U.S. Army and Army National Guard service he graduated second-ranked in his law School class from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was an Editor of the Alabama Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.

He served as a law clerk to Federal Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr. in 1973 and 1974. He has practiced law in South Alabama [mostly Mobile and Baldwin Counties] since 1974, aside from service as full-time U.S. Magistrate from the Southern District of Alabama from 1979-1985. He made a three-hour training video for the Federal Judicial Center, which is charged with training Federal Judges. He has been a member of the American Law Institute for more than two decades, and is a "Master of the Bench" member of the Mobile Chapter of the American Inns of Court.  His law practice involves civil cases in state and federal courts which were substantial enough to have led to almost forty reported Court opinions.

David is an author [either alone or jointly] of 25 published technical legal works in various fields.

In the field of antitrust, in 1978 David was Chairman of the Antitrust Section of the Alabama State Bar [now the Business Litigation Section], and has served as Vice Chair of two committees of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association.  He was an author of parts of five supplements to three of the editions of the multi-volume antitrust law treatise Antitrust Law Developments, published by the American Bar Association's antitrust section. David is author of "Your Momma's Rules to Keep You and Your Outfit Out of Antitrust Trouble", which was praised by Antitrust Magazine  as an example of  using humor and common sense in antitrust law education for business people. David is listed in "The Best Lawyers in America" in the fields of Business Litigation and Antitrust, and is listed as a  "Superlawyer" in Antitrust Litigation.

In his maritime practice David has served on the faculties of both the Tulane Admiralty Law Institute [1987] and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute [1982], and has litigated and appealed cases involving a variety of issues.

In the civil trial procedure area, David was the first Chair of the Lawyer's Advisory Committee for the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit [which covers appeals from Federal trial courts in Georgia, Alabama and Florida] and served for many years on the Alabama Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure. He has extensive experience in class action litigation. In 2008 David served as a part of a multi-firm legal team which secured a jury verdict of more than $192 million in an intellectual properties case, the 14th largest jury verdict in the nation that year.

In his community David was President of the 300-member Rotary Club of Mobile in 1992 and was a Rotary Assistant District Governor, was Chairman of the School board of his parish K-8 Catholic school immediately before it was named a Presidential School, and was President of the Order of the Coif/Farrah Law Society alumni in Alabama. He twice served as President of the Mobile Vanderbilt Alumni Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Vanderbilt National Alumni Association. David has twice been Vice-Chairman of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and is active in other civic ventures. He is a local historian and often gives speeches on topics of local history, and has published seven articles on history topics. He is a fisherman and bird hunter.

David and his wife Julie live in Point Clear, Alabama, and have three grown children.
